The Link Between Stress and Hormonal Imbalance

Chronic stress can severely disrupt your endocrine system, leading to irregular cycles, mood shifts, and metabolic changes.

#### The HPA Axis and Cortisol

When stressed, the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis activates. This causes the release of cortisol. High cortisol suppresses the release of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, leading to reduced LH and Progesterone.

#### Consequences of Stress on Your Cycle

  • Anovulatory Cycles: Ovulation does not occur, leading to missed periods.
  • Luteal Phase Defect: Insufficient progesterone causes a shortened luteal phase, impacting fertility.
  • Estrogen Dominance: Relative lack of progesterone can cause heavy bleeding, breast tenderness, and bloating.
