Understanding Consent: The Foundation of Every Healthy RelationshipLesson 1 of 1

Understanding Consent: The Foundation of Every Healthy Relationship

Consent is a clear, voluntary, informed, and enthusiastic agreement between people to participate in physical or sexual activity.

#### Principles of Consent (F.R.I.E.S.)

  • Freely Given: Made without pressure, manipulation, threats, or influence of drugs/alcohol.
  • Reversible: Anyone can change their mind at any time, even if they previously agreed.
  • Informed: Everyone knows exactly what they are agreeing to.
  • Enthusiastic: A genuine, positive "yes," not a reluctant or silent shrug.
  • Specific: Consent to one act does not imply consent to others.

#### Communicating Boundaries

Respecting boundaries shows maturity and empathy. Ask open questions:

  • "Is this comfortable for you?"
  • "Do you want to stop?"

Always pause and check in.
